Federal Call to Action: 

The administration illegally cut $1.9 billion of National Institute of Health (NIH) funding.  Only Congress can cut funding. Call and email your USA Senators/Congressperson regarding the defunding that has halted researchand negatively affected the lives of students, scholars, and staff.  See the joint letter from the American Association of Colleges and Universities and the American Council on Education (https://www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-call-for-constructive-engagement).  

DOGE and the Privacy Act  – Answer Jamie Raskin’s call to file a Freedom of Information (FOIA) or Privacy Act request with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Take steps to protect your own private data. Whistleblowers allege this an attempt by DOGE to build a “master database” on American citizens that can be used for improper reasons or repressive goals and to weaponize the information to use against people they dislike, dissidents, surveil immigrants or other target groups.

Federal Call to Action: 

Refer to last week’s Call to Action on the Abrego Garcia case for background. Sign up for a petition, send letters to the Trump administration, thank some Democrats, support the ACLU, and make demands from Republicans at the federal and state level to address last week’s events related to the Kilmar Abrego Garcia disappearance. 

State Call to Action:

Contact the U.S. and State legislators from your district to request a Town Hall meeting with residents. The town hall should include a legislative update – successes and disappointments – from the recent session, an opportunity for legislators to answer questions, and an opportunity for residents to share issues of importance to them

Ask County Executive Cassilly to increase funding to Harford County Community College (HCC) and our public libraries

Call and email your Congressperson/Senator, and we are also asking that you include your Maryland Senators/Delegates,in this Call to Action and ask them to pressure the Trump administration to follow the order of U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland dad who was wrongly deported to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) in El Salvador.

Call and email your Congressperson/Senator and ask them to vote NO to H.R. 22 Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act which will disenfranchise countless voters, especially women, seniors, transgender and low-income citizens.

 

State Call to Action:

Contact Senate President Bill and your State Senators to urge support for SB828 The Maryland Values Act with amendments 

Update: The amended bill covers both guidance on immigration in sensitive locations as well as key components of HB1222 (The Maryland Values Act) in establishing procedures for interactions with federal immigration authorities and ending certain immigration enforcement agreements.

THIS CALL TO ACTION HAS A DEADLINE – TUESDAY APRIL 8TH. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR NEIGHBORS IN PERRYMAN AND BETTER MANAGEMENT OF OUR LAND RESOURCES THROUGH APPROPRIATE ZONING 

We are asking everyone to oppose the proposed upzoning of Parcel F-002 in District F (from AG/B1 to Commercial Industrial).

We are also calling on the Council to amend the bill to rezone the Mitchell Farm and nearby Light Industrial parcels to Agricultural (AG).

Call and email your Federal elected officials to demand an investigation into the breach of security by the Secretary of Defense, the Vice President, the Secretary of State, Director of Intelligence and many others.

State Call to Action:

Call and email the Delegates and Senators considering legislation that would protect immigrants from ICE at sensitive locations, like schools and hospitals and to ban the use of 287g in our State.

Local Call to Action:

Call and email our County Council members and ask them NOT to support the proposed Resolution in support of 287g, which will be offered at the next County Council meeting.

2.     Email the Education, Energy and Environment Committee Bill HB0161 Primary and Secondary Education – Comprehensive Health Education Framework

Local Call to Action:

Email or call the County Executive to demand increased funding for our schools. Losing summer school for a second year in a row shows the devastating effects of the County Executive’s failure to fund education.

Federal Call to Action: 

Contact your Congressperson/Senator to express your utter disgust at the way in which President Zelenskyy from Ukraine was treated.

Demand that prior commitments to Ukraine be fulfilled and that future commitments of support be immediately forthcoming.

Continue to pressure them on Medicaid cuts and to hold in person Town Halls.

State Call to Action:

Call/write the committee and your representative on the committee to urge them to support the full Maryland Voting Rights Act Package currently in committee review.

Local Call to Action:

Call/write County Exec Cassilly and tell him to increase the percentage of County budget spent on HCPS back to the level is was when he took office.

Week of 2/24/2025 – 3/1/2025

Federal Call to Action: 

Call your Congressperson and Senators: Tell them to extend Telehealth options in Medicaid and Medicare. Tell them to fight any cuts to Medicaid, the President promised Medicaid would not be touched.  

State Call to Action:

Email and call the (1) House Judiciary, (2) Ways & Means committees, and (3)  the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, especially your representatives, and ask them to support HOUSE BILL 1433 (SB422) CHILDREN ARE REDEEMABLE.  This bill would raise the age at which a juvenile can be tried as an adult from 14 (current law), to 16.

Local Call to Action:

Email and Call the County Executive first and then your County Council rep. Tell the County Executive that increased funding to Harford County Public Schools is a necessity and is his responsibility. County funding has continued to DECREASE as a portion of the County Budget.
